MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE 21st FEBRUARY 2024

.

MINUTES FOR THE MONTHLY PUBLIC MEETING OF THE

NEW KILLARNEY-RIVIERA ASSOCIATION

HELD VIRTUALLY OVER THE INTERNET

ON WEDNESDAY 21 FEBRUARY 2024 at 18H30

.

PRESENT:     Wayne Ford (Killarney Village); Charles Whyte (Beverley Heights); Sanjay Lala (Sloan Square)

.

1. WELCOME

  • Wayne opened the meeting, and welcomed the attendees.

2.  APOLOGIES RECEIVED

  • Muhammed Lokhat (The Riviera).

3. DISCUSSION OF TIME CONSTRAINT

  • We will try to keep the meeting to one hour if possible.

4. CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES, AND MATTERS ARISING

  • The minutes of the previous meeting have been circulated to all attendees, and have been approved by them. The details thereof were incorporated into the monthly newsletter.

5.  STATUS OF OUR SUBURB, AND LIST OF ISSUES REQUIRING ACTION

  • Squatters are still camping on the motorway embankment. There is now also a new group of people who sleep on 1st Street on some evenings, around the area of the illegal taxi rank. Residents are asked please to obtain film and photographic evidence, which can be followed up by the police. When you report these issues to JMPD and the ward councillor, please always get a reference number.
  • Safety issues in Oxford Road – Charles is corresponding with the ward councillor to get her help here, and Charles has also asked the principal of Saxonwold Primary School to add his weight, particularly as concerns the safety of school children who cross Oxford Road at the intersection with Riviera Road. Saxonwold Primary School falls into a different ward, and the involvement of two ward councillors is better than just one.
  • There is also a problem with “informal” traffic controllers at the intersection of Riviera Road and Oxford Road, as well as the intersection of Riviera Road and Main Road. These are clearly untrained people, who could cause an accident, and who also risk being run over themselves.
  • We need to continue to emphasise the on-going risks of cell-phone snatching on our pavements, and of the cat burglars. We need to continue to ask all buildings to constantly remind their residents and visitors to be careful of their belongings while they are out on the pavements. We used to have a standard printed sign for this purpose, which was sponsored by Pam Golding Properties. Wayne will approach the new Pam Golding agent to see if this project can be revived.
  • Illegal hawkers and drinking on pavements – once again, we need photos or videos as evidence, which can then be sent to JMPD and the ward councillor. When you report things to JMPD or the municipal departments, please always get a reference number.
  • Street and pavement repairs – there has not been much progress since last month. Once again, please all take photos or videos, and send them to JRA and the ward councillor, and get a reference number.
  • Dead trees – there has not been much progress since last month. The NKRA trimmed the dead branch that was blocking the pavement in 4th Avenue at the circle, but the dead tree itself is on the motorway embankment, and it needs to be removed by the municipality. There are other dead pavement trees around the suburb as well. Once again, please all take photos or videos, and send them to JRA and the ward councillor, and get a reference number.
  • The Killarney Mall wants to hold an Easter Egg Hunt in the park around the Easter weekend. They also intend to have jumping castles, and music and a DJ/MC. They need to have permission from City Parks, but in addition the residents who border the park need to be consulted. Wayne will publicise this event in the newsletter, and will communicate to the four neighbouring buildings as well.
  • NEW ISSUES
  • Taxi rank progress – the project to substantially refurbish the Killarney Mall is still in the planning stage, and no final decisions have been taken yet.
  • The membership invoices for the 2024 member subscriptions will be sent out in March.
  • Members will be asked in the newsletter to suggest new projects. It has been suggested to once again repaint the street names on the kerb stones.
  • Members will be asked in the newsletter and on the WhatApp group to recommend service providers and contractors, to be added to our published database on our website.

.

The meeting was closed at 19h25, with thanks to all who participated.

Our next meeting will be held virtually on

WEDNESDAY 20 MARCH 2024 AT 18H30

PLEASE PASS ON THESE MINUTES TO OTHER RESIDENTS IN YOUR BUILDINGS
