The NKRA is grateful for the support provided in the 4th Street park by our park sponsors RUSSELL FISHER PROPERTIES and VISION TACTICAL SECURITY and the KILLARNEY MALL, and for the street cleaning services provided by RCS SECURITY SERVICES.

NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2012

NEWSLETTER – AUGUST 2012

Traffic Safety:
We have received several requests from residents to lobby for a traffic circle or similar at the corner of 3rd Street and 2nd Ave, which has seen some quite serious accidents. The JRA required us to first undertake a traffic study, at our own expense, to determine if any traffic calming measures would be appropriate in 3rd Street. The outcome is that a traffic circle is apparently not justified, but a raised pedestrian crossing would be appropriate. This is not as good, but it’s better than nothing.
We are waiting for the JRA to finalise designs and so forth, and we hope to see some action soon.
Once again we will be required to finance the improvements ourselves, as the JRA does not receive a big enough portion of our rates and taxes to be able to undertake improvements of this nature. Our finances have been seriously depleted by recent projects, and so we appeal to all buildings who have not contributed to the NKRA thusfar, please to consider making a contribution so that we can continue to improve our neighbourhood while we wait for the government to sort itself out.

Crime Awareness Alert:
Car theft is still our biggest crime problem.
Please always check that your doors are properly locked before you walk away, even if the lights have flashed and beeped, as the gangs now have remote jammers which can block the doors from locking. Also, don’t leave valuables (including clothing) in the vehicle where they can be seen from the outside. On a cold night, a jacket or coat left visible inside a car is a serious temptation to a cold and desperate passer-by.
It was noted that the lamp posts in 1st Street cnr 4th Ave are being tampered with – quite possibly to facilitate car thefts and related crimes. Please keep an eye on all the lamp-posts near your buildings, and let us know urgently if you note that they are being tampered with.
It is possible that some of the hawkers and the beggars in our area might be linked to gangs which commit crimes such as burglaries, car theft and hijacking. Please don’t support the hawkers and beggars, as this encourages them to remain in the area.
If you notice any suspicious persons or activity, please phone the police patrol van immediately, on 071 675 6001, so that they can try to catch the suspects red-handed. Your inputs are invaluable in assisting the SAPS to prevent crimes before they happen, but it doesn’t help to complain about things a few days later, when it’s too late for the police to do anything.

Recycling Project:
Our new recycling project is off to a good start, with more than 20 buildings apparently on board already. The contractor is small and has some challenges, but our municipal landfills are almost full, so every bit we recycle makes a difference.
If you want to join, or if you need additional bins, please contact Teboho or Charmaine by email at tebohof@lefatshelarona.org, or call them on cell-phone number 083 413 8162.

Illegal buses:
We have noted that that some bus drivers are continuing to take short-cuts though our suburbs, on roads which are not designated bus routes.
Please help us to identify the bus company that owns these buses, as well as the ID number of each bus and the time of each offence, so that we can report the drivers to their employers.

NEW TREES
Once again, all buildings that have received new trees are requested to water them diligently through the winter months, so as to help them to get established.

Pavement and Pothole Repairs:
We are delighted to note that the water pipe repair in Riviera Road at the corner of 2nd Avenue has finally been completed. We are almost as delighted to note that the water-pipe repair excavation in 5th Street at the corner of 4th Ave has finally been filled in, although the tarred surface has not as yet been reinstated. We hope the tar will be repaired before the rains begin.
Sadly, the leaks and related subsidence at the corner of Riviera Road and 4th Avenue persist.
We thank Councillor Ravid for her efforts.

NKRA Signage
At a recent meeting of the NKRA, a range of “branded” NKRA signs were approved. There will be three different signs to begin with:
The first sign is to be issued only to buildings which are making financial contributions to the NKRA, so as to acknowledge the contribution and the commitment of those residents.
The second sign will be issued only to buildings who are participating in the NKRA recycling project. Hopefully this will inspire other residents to join the project also.
The third sign will be issued to all buildings, and is intended to alert all residents and visitors to the risk of vehicle theft and theft out of vehicles.

The symbolism of the NKRA logo is as follows:
• The green background represents the general community, being our green leafy suburbs;
• The small green arrows (in between the large white arrows) represent the various small contributions that are made to NKRA activities by members of the community;
• The four white arrows represent the four main outputs from NKRA activities, which are also our motto: Safer, Cleaner, Better, Greener;
• The white output arrows are larger than the green input arrows, because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
If your building would like to put up these signs, please let us know. The cost of the signs is being sponsored, so there will be no charge to the participating buildings.
